Which Leather is Best for Wallets?

We may be biased, but we are pretty confident when we say our team knows good leather. We spend so much time choosing the perfect materials for our genuine leather wallets - to ensure quality, durability and masculinity - so you can be sure that the full grain leather we offer is the best of the best.

The Leather Rule

There is one cardinal rule to remember about quality leather: it is perfectly imperfect. Just like people, each sample has natural imperfections and marks. Our full grain leather also develops a rich patina with use - which contributes to the overall look and feel of our wallets. That’s why we always say: House of Jack wallets get better with time! The more you use them, the better they look.

How Can You Tell That Leather is Genuine?

Basically, if what we said above doesn’t define the leather you’re holding, it could be synthetic. Some red flags to look for:

If it’s described as man-made or vegan, it’s not genuine leather. If the material cannot be scratched, it’s not genuine leather.

If the material you’re looking at doesn’t have texture or imperfections to it, it could be synthetic. Leather should have a natural handfeel and definitely encompass wrinkles, a natural grain and unique markings.

You know the whiff you notice when you first open leather which has been in a package? Or the smell you notice when you put your wallet to your nose? Don’t forget that smell! Use the sniff test on anything you’re suspicious of. If it doesn’t have that distinct leather smell, it’s probably synthetic (especially if it smells like plastic!).

If purchased from a big box store, or a discount chain store, and the price is too good to be true, definitely question the material of the wallet.

Quality Cowhide Leather

No synthetics here, ever. We construct our wallets using quality full grain cowhide leather. Everything from our leather wallets with money clips to our bifolds and trifolds are made from top quality hides. Good leather gets better with age, and our wallets will as well.

No two cows are alike…and therefore, no two House of Jack wallets are alike. Our leather wallets are completely individualistic, and their designs are hand stamped to make them even more unique.

What Can You Expect with Cowhide Leather?

Natural hide characteristics like color, texture and surface can all vary from wallet to wallet. This is not an imperfection, but rather proof of the uniqueness of the wallet (and the cow from which the leather was made). Expect color shading, grain variation, scars and wrinkles to be a fun part of the leather wallet experience.

I just received my wallet a few days ago. I’m very happy with the quality of the wallet. The leather itself is beautiful. The Money Clip is very strong. For decades I’ve carried a wallet and a money clip, and I can tell you this is one of the strongest money clips I’ve ever owned. It also fits very comfortably in my front pocket. I LOVE it!
